Knox's policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was referred to as "Knox Together 2020-2021" but I think that name is lame as hell.

Policies
Symptom Tracking
Every day Knox students would receive an email asking about covid symptoms, test results, and temperature. Students were required to fill out this survey everyday. Depending on your results, you were either asked to stay inside, placed in quarantine, or were good to go.

Initial Quarantine
When students first arrived on campus during the pandemic, they were placed in initial quarantine. Initial quarantine resulted in students taking a covid test, and staying inside of their dorms for their results. Masks were required to be worn at all times except in student's own dorms. Students could not leave the campus. Students would quarantine in their dorms until their first test result, then which they would take a second one. After receiving their first negative test result, students would move into modified quarantine.

Modified Quarantine
When students received their first negative result, they would be placed into modified quarantine. Modified quarantine lasted 2 weeks. During this time students were able to hang out in their suite and walk around on campus. Students were not able to leave the county, but could go into town. Masks were required at all times except in students own dorms. After 2 weeks, students were able to go into a regular quarantine.

After Quarantine
When students finished quarantining, they were allowed to hang out with other students in other suites, go to classes, and eat food in the cafeteria. Students did have to social distance and wear masks at all times.

Positive Test Results
If students received a positive or inconclusive test result, or were in contact with a student who tested positive, they were placed into quarantine. Students were placed into Conger-Neal for 2 weeks until they received a negative test result. These were referred to as the quarantine dorms. Students had their food delivered to them, and could not leave the building until they tested negative, or were in quarantine for 2 weeks. Knox kept a record of all students in quarantine to keep track of the positive cases on campus.

After Vaccination
After students received vaccines, they were able to go mask-less outside, but required a mask inside of academic buildings.

General Student Reaction
A giant majority of students were very diligent about following protocols, as they wished to keep themselves and everyone else around them safe. Some students remained home during part or all of the year. Not all students were safe, as there were some illegal parties throughout the year, or some groups of students would not wear masks in private, or many students purposefully wore their masks incorrectly.

Many students also did not fill out the daily symptom tracking, as they deemed it too tedious, or lied on the survey as any marking of any symptom would send an alert to the health services, even if that symptom was from a disability or other previous condition. For example one of the symptoms listed was headaches, which can have many causes that do not include covid, such as eyestrain from zoom class, not getting enough sleep, or even being hungover.

Timeline
Winter Break 2019 - Winter Term 2020
Word of a mysterious new coronavirus was spreading through China. At first we had all assumed that it wasn't anything to be too worried about, but oh boy were we wrong. I don't know if Knox released any statements regarding the outbreak in either late 2019 or during winter term 2020 (as the person writing this was not a student at the time), but I'm sure there was something.

Spring Term 2020
During the academic year of 2019-2020, there was a global pandemic of the virus Covid-19. Knox switched to Virtual Classes using the program Zoom. Flunk day became virtual, and students were sent home.

Fall Term 2020
Knox College decided to open up campus during the fall term, though students could choose to take entirely virtual classes from home. There were many guidelines in place about how to stay safe during these times. All students on campus were covid tested, and placed into quarantine until they received their results a few days later. Modified quarantine resulted in students staying inside their dorms, only leaving to grab food at the cafeteria (social distanced of course), and having masks on at all times excluding dorm rooms. After students received their test results, they would either be placed into modified quarantine if they were given a negative result, or placed into quarantine if given a positive or inconclusive result. Knox only tested about 10% of the student body every week, and students were chosen at random. The tests were unpleasant, as you had to get a cotton swap up your nose.

Knox kept track of the percentage of positive testing and quarantined students on record, and would publish the data on their website. Positive testing and quarantined students were kept anonymous on the data. The percentage of positive testing students was always very low, but the quarantined student percentage was always slightly higher. There were many instances of an athlete testing positive, which resulted in the the entire team of that sport being quarantined. This was confirmed the case for Men's Soccer, Men's Football, and Woman's Swimming, as well as a few other teams.

Many things on campus were changed extensively, from hours of facilities, to the cafeteria, to classrooms. Students were advised to only stay on campus, and required permission to leave the county. The gym was only open for athletes and had to be closed every few hours for cleaning. The cafeteria originally was just a tent outside that gave students to go boxes with food and a few snacks, but eventually changed back to the cafeteria building where the staff would serve limited amounts of food buffet style with limited inside seating. A majority of classes were remote, but some had the option to go in person as a hybrid class. These hybrid classes both had students in person and on zoom. If you were in person, masks and social distancing were still required. Many clubs were still on campus, but were limited in their activities and membership.

Even though the pandemic stopped many events, that is not to say that this year was uneventful. Improv Club still had a show, Ultimate Frisbee was revamped and became very popular, and a protest even happened on campus, which you can read about in Fall 2020 Protest. Official ensembles on campus were still able to practice, all be it in a limited fashion. Terpsichore, Choir, and Theater were all able to at least practice throughout the term.

During this time, because of Teresa Amott's retirement at the end of the year, a search for a new president was on it's way. With both faculty and student committees dedicated to finding the right candidate.

Winter Term 2021
The first half of winter term was entirely virtual. After 5 weeks off campus, students were given one week off to quarantine back on campus. The same policies were in place, but the tests were swapped to saliva tests, and every student was tested every 2 weeks. Vaccines were open in Peoria for students who had previous conditions.

Many things had opened up a bit more, as the gym became open to everyone and not just athletes, and the caf allowed more students to eat inside. These changes felt very minimal, as due to the cold weather most students remained inside regularly.

The search for a new President was still on it's way, and after many rounds of interviews, the committees had decided that Dr. Andy McGadney would become the next president of Knox College. Throughout the process he was noted for his inclusivity, as after a student asked a question regarding KDSA, he made sure to mention in all of his following comments what changes he could implement for disabled students. He was also noted for wearing a bowtie to all interviews.

Spring Term 2021
The same policies were put in place, but vaccines were open to many more on campus. Vaccine clinics were held to help get students fully vaccinated. By the end of the year a large majority of students and faculty were vaccinated. Because students were given a week off in the middle of winter term, spring break became non-existent. Many rules regarding masks were lifted as students became vaccinated, as if you were fully vaccinated you were able to go outside with out a mask and hang out with other vaccinated students inside with out a mask. Though all academic buildings still required a mask.

After 10 years, President Teresa Amott retired on July 1st, and Dr. McGadney took over as the 20th President of Knox College.

Summer Term 2021
Knox started offering summer classes for the first time, with many classes offering a remote/hybrid option. Masks were still required in person. Classes were often only half credits, though it was possible for students to take more than one class.

Dr. Andy McGadney became president of Knox College. In an interview with TSPR, McGadney released some details about his personal life and his plan for the upcoming 2021-2022 year, developing "an alternative plan that would require testing".

Fall 2021
Knox required all students and faculty to be fully vaccinated, (with religious exceptions).

On March 16, 2007, three unnamed students broke into the Admissions Office in CFA by climbing in through a barely-opened window, then picked the lock on the file cabinet of Beth Jonsberg to get at a set of Master Tour Keys for the school. With keys in hand, the three adventurers then set their sights on Old Main.

Once inside Old Main, the students went up the Old Main Stairs to the dented door to the bell tower, whose lock was then picked -- it took skill. The students then entered, picked the lock to the trapdoor, and looked out upon Galesburg from the roof, each taking a turn to touch the bell.

Afterwards, the Bells Of Break '07 themselves started when the students picked the lock to the bell's control panel, then set the bells to ring every hour-and-ten-minutes (like a Class Period) all night, beginning at 11:00 PM, for as many nights as it would take for security to figure out what had happened.

The bells rang nightly for six days.
On Thursday, 23 August 2007, wind gusts up to 70 mph downed trees around campus, damaged Conger-Neal and part of the roof of Old Main, and knocked out power in Galesburg and other areas in Illinois. At its peak, 30,000 Ameren customers were without power. Nearly 10,000 customers in Galesburg were still without power a day later. One house in Galesburg, a rental property owned by Pinky Gibbons, was damaged. One man in rural Victoria was killed by a falling tree.

The civil defense systems in Galesburg were not sounded, the Register-Mail reported, because the systems are typically used for tornadoes. By the time the National Weather Service alerted city officials, the storm was already there, said Fire Chief John Cratty in the article.

No internal damage was caused to Old Main because the original roof is still intact under the new one, Director of Public Relations Karrie Heartlein told the Register-Mail. there are some holes in the roof of Conger-Neal, but the buildings should be ready when students move in September 1.

A song by our very own Ben Farrer. The title includes a pun (if you haven't noticed yet). It's about Galesburg, trains, corn and other Galesburgian stuff. Oh, and also Baked (both types). Lyrics are below and you can listen to it here:

Do you like watching people make decisions

You know they're gonna regret in the morning

Well you could go to Cherryoke

It is held every Thursday

We get drunk and we get lonely

Singing about our ex-girlfriends

(oh cos that's definitely gonna win her back)

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Where are all these trains going what does this all mean

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Why is all this corn growing what does this all mean

do you believe in paying a dollar for pbr

do you like getting your arse kicked at pool and darts

well you could go to jazz at fat fish

they jazz up some pretty good shit

it is where all the cool kids go

but it's not quite my tempo

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Where are all these trains going what does this all mean

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Why is all this corn growing what does this all mean

How many types of cheese can you name

If you want to learn some more I know a place

Well you could go to Cornucopia

It is like a cheese utopia

If you like your cheeses smokier

get that one sandwich with guoda

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Where are all these trains going what does this all mean

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Why is all this corn growing what does this all mean

Do you like eating pizza for breakfast lunch and dinner

Sometimes with a thick crust sometimes thinner

Well I eat three meals a day at baked

I call that doing the triple baked

and depending on what type of brownies I make

I might get quadruple baked

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Where are all these trains going what does this all mean

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Why is all this corn growing what does this all mean

now she's back in the atmosphere

drops of Jupiter in her hair

that was not the bridge to this song

that was this song getting stuck behind a train cos it doesn't have a bridge

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Where are all these trains going what does this all mean

Woah Galesburg Illinois

Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) is a multifunctional nucleotide that is most important as a "molecular currency" of intracellular energy transfer. In this role ATP transports chemical energy within cells for metabolism. It is produced as an energy source during the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration and consumed by many enzymes and a multitude of cellular processes including biosynthetic reactions, motility and cell division. ATP is also incorporated into nucleic acids by polymerases in the processes of DNA replication and transcription. In signal transduction pathways, ATP is used as a substrate by kinases that phosphorylate proteins and lipids, as well as by adenylate cyclase, which uses ATP to produce the second messenger molecule cyclic AMP.

The structure of this molecule consists of a purine base (adenine) attached to the 1' carbon atom of a pentose (ribose). Three phosphate groups are attached at the 5' carbon atom of the pentose sugar. When ATP is used in DNA synthesis, the ribose sugar is first converted to deoxyribose by ribonucleotide reductase. ATP was discovered in 1929 by Karl Lohmann,[1] and was proposed to be the main energy-transfer molecule in the cell by Fritz Albert Lipmann in 1941.

The following is timestamped April 29, 2009 2:14 PM. It is the safety email preceding Flunk Day 2009.

<hr width=100%" size="2" color="black" align="center">

[From Dean Romano]

Hello Kiddies!

The time has come for our annual tradition of Flunk Day myths, facts, and, of course, community expectations. This is the "official" e-mail that governs and sets the tone (aka "rules") for el Dia de Flunk.

But first, kudos are in order to the Wiki Fire which many of you have recommended I read. So I did...last night. Wow! =-O ! Not quite sure how to respond to the Wiki Fire...2 feet, 4 feet, a haze of smoke in Old Main (now that is clearly not true!). And quite the fascination with someone named "Pam." Because of all of this stress, Pam has left campus and gone to "the city"--New York ~ not Peoria. Well done Wiki people...now you have scared off Pam and she will be forever lost among the really "big" buildings. You should feel ashamed.

Ok...time to pay attention. I'm serious here...really. Oh, before I forget, did you know that (and this is really true--really) Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter changed political parties on Tuesday because of Knox alum Brad Middleton '08, who is the "power" behind Illinois Senator Durbin in DC? Well done, Brad! We are proud of you--well, most of us ;-) .

Sorry...back to "myths" and "facts."

* Fact: Today was not Flunk Day.
* Myth: The grass on campus is never cut on Sundays.
* Fact: There are food service deliveries on Sunday evenings during Spring Term.
* Myth: Seniors always know when Flunk Day takes place.
* Fact: The prairie plot located by the tennis courts is Knox's version of Stephen King's Pet Sematary.
* Myth: Varsity athletic teams practice during Flunk Day. Can you say D-A-N-G-E-R-O-U-S??!!
* Fact: Flunk Day is at the top of alumni's cherished memories.
* Myth: The mud pit is cool!
* Fact: The mud pit is totally nasty and is not a part of el Dia de Flunk--why would we sanction something that is this totally gross, dangerous, and creates physical ailments?
* Myth: Flunk Day can never take place on a Monday or Friday...or can it?
* Fact: Flunk Day is a community event for all members of the Knox community--meaning students, faculty, staff, and their families.
* Myth: Flunk Day and Cinco de Mayo are not one in the same...get a clue!
* Fact: The faculty softball team always dominates the seniors; does anyone care?
* Myth: The Villa is not Flunk Day Central (well, sorta myth...we will have to wait and see).
* Fact: Andrew Polk wants--according to Facebook post--to be mentioned in relationship to el Dia de Flunk (how does it feel?).
* Myth: Knox faculty love Flunk Day. Well, not really...takes away from scheduled teaching, exams, and other fun activities. A concern that Flunk Day takes away from the College's academic focus. Sure. Believe what you want!
* Fact: Campus Safety officers are really cool people. 'Tis true. They are our friends and are here to ensure all of our safety (Note: Not cool to run away from them on Flunk Day ~ can cause coronary...for someone).
* Myth: Craig Southern loves Flunk Day...'nuf said!
* Fact: The best of the Knox community should be evident on Flunk Day--absolutely!!!

I am reminded once again how truly amazing, unique, and special this College on the Prairie is. While these traditions have largely passed on in collegiate America, Flunk Day works and continues because of each one of you. Have a truly special and wonderful day.

Flunk on!
-Xavier (aka Dean of Flunk!)

Fact & Myth: A movement was started years ago on Flunk Day to change the Knox athletic team mascot from "Prairie Fire" to the "Knox Squirrels" or "Prairie Lobsters." The president then stifled the collection of petitions as "Prairie Lobsters" was a clear favorite--mascot potential endless. I say let's try again. Go Prairie Lobsters!
