GERM 337 or GERM 337E, also known as German Society and Film, is an advanced German film studies course offered at Knox. It counts for 1 credit. The course was most recently taught by Karl Maurer.

Course Description[edit]

Official Course Description[edit]

"Survey and analyses of German films within their social, political, and intellectual contexts. The course may present a broad survey from 1919 to the present, focus on an individual historical period, a director or group of directors, or on a theme in German film."[1]

Credits and Prerequisites[edit]

The course is worth one credit. This course does not satisfy any Foundation Requirements or Competency Requirements. The prerequisite for GERM 337, the German-language version of the course, is GERM 202 or GERM 210 or equivalent. The prerequisite for GERM 337E, the English-language version, is sophomore standing or permission of the instructor.

Texts[edit]

  • Bergfelder, Tim, et al. (2003). "The German Cinema Book." ISBN 978-0851709451.

Course Format[edit]

The course focused entirely on film analysis. Tuesday evening a film would be shown, and the German students would come to a one-hour class before the showing; the following Wednesday the German and English sections discussed the film together, and on the following Monday separately.

Course Schedule[edit]

Due to the small size of the German department, the course is offered erratically, at the discretion of the German professor. It has only been offered once in the past four years, and it is unclear whether it will be offered again, as that professor, Karl Maurer, no longer works at Knox.
