GERM 302 or GERM 302E, also known as Realism in the German Context or informally as German Realism, is an advanced German studies course offered at Knox. It counts for 1 credit. The course was most recently taught by Andrea Reimann.

Course Description[edit]

Official Course Description[edit]

"The realist tradition in German literature and film from the 19th century to the present. Students are presented with an overview of what German writers and filmmakers have viewed as 'life as it really is' and how they have chosen to represent 'reality' over the past 150 years."[1]

Credits and Prerequisites[edit]

The course is worth one credit. This course does not satisfy any Foundation Requirements or Competency Requirements. The prerequisite for GERM 302, the German-language version of the course, is GERM 202 or equivalent. The prerequisite for GERM 302E, the English-language version, is sophomore standing or permission of the instructor.

Course Format[edit]

The course discusses German realism and various different works, including plays, novels, art, and films that illustrate realism. Other European examples, such as Italian Realism, are included. The class is heavily discussion oriented, with significant reading, small group discussion work, individual and group presentations, and film viewings. There are several small papers and one final term paper, all focused on film. Although there were separate German and English listings, the course is taught in English because of its typically small size, which makes dividing it impractical.

Course Schedule[edit]

Due to the small size of the German department, the course is offered erratically, at the discretion of the German professor. It has only been offered once in the past four years, and it is unclear whether it will be offered again, as that professor, Andrea Reimann, no longer works at Knox.
