LOSER (circa 1860).
Though it should be pointed out, often to the surprise of non-History majors, that he defeated Lincoln in the 1858 Illinois Senate race. One of the most important and accomplished politicians of his day, Douglas is now remembered for two reasons: he argued, in retrospect, on the wrong side of the issues in the famed series of debates between he and Abraham Lincoln, and he had a very large head in relationship to his somewhat diminutive stature.
