An independent study is an individual class that covers material not offered by the normal classes at Knox. In order to take an independent study, a student needs to find a professor to be their advisor and get permission from the department of the topic in question. Many independent studies are student-designed, and can thus be a tad ridiculous, or at least quite interesting. A lot of times it's an excuse to do very little work for an A. Other times it ends up being three credits worth of work for a C for one credit.
