The Kinsey Scale was developed by Dr. Alfred Kinsey. It charts an individual's orientation on an axis between "Entirely Heterosexual" and "Entirely Homosexual." The scale was innovative because instead of supposing that people are either straight or gay, it suggests that they might rather be somewhere in between.
Knox College gives much better examples of the scale than most places.
