A God Damn Independent, or GDI, is a student who refuses to join a Greek organization. Not all non-Greek students are GDIs, as there is a certain level of hostility involved in calling one's self a GDI.
This phrase has also been known to be used by single people who are trying to convince themselves and everyone else that they don't mind being single. Mostly it doesn't work.
