Editing Whiting Hall

Located at 19 E [[Tompkins Street]], Whiting Hall was formerly a female [[residence hall]].

Originally called the Female Seminary, the current building was constructed at the same time as [[Old Main]]. It replaced the previous Female Seminary, located near the intersection of [[Seminary Street|Seminary]] and [[Simmons Street]], which had burned to the ground shortly after opening in 1843. The new Female Seminary was five stories tall and cost $30,000 to construct. It originally accommodated 90 students and included dining and living areas, classrooms, music and art studios and a chapel.

The name was changed to Whiting Hall in 1894 in honor of Maria Whiting, principal of the Female Seminary in the 1880s, who donated $5,000 for the construction of the building's east wing in 1885. Shortly before her death, a west wing was also added with living space for 124 female students. The building continued to house [[Knox]] women until the college sold it in 1979.

Today, Whiting Hall is a senior citizen apartment building owned by Meridian Group Inc.
