reCaptcha is software running on this wiki that checks to make sure all edits are made by either humans or allowed bots. If you would like to see it in action, make an anonymous edit or try to create a new user account.
Digitizing old books[edit]
reCAPTCHA not only cuts down on spam, but it is also digitizing old books that have been scanned, but are too decrepit to be read by Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Basically, the first difficult to read word in the reCAPTCHA test is one the program know the answer to. The second is one from an old book. As people all over the world attempt to pass these reCAPTCHA tests, their answers to the second word are used to, word by word, make an old book digital.
