What Are Alternative Menstrual Products?

Altherative Menstrual Products are products used in place of tampons or disposable pads. Often women prefer these types of products becasue they are more affordable, better for the environment and support women's health. Here are some alternative products to try:

  • Sea Sponges are real sponges that fit inside the vagina like a tampon.
  • The Keeper is a small cup made out of natural rubber that collects the blood instead of absorbing it.
  • The Diva Cup is a small cup made out silicone that collects rather than abosorbs blood.
  • Reusable Pads are pads made out of cloth. They can be homemade or purchased.
  • Instead is a cup made out of disposable plastic, it collects the blood.

Benefits of these Alternatives

Not only are many of these products more affordable than disposables, and are also much more eco-friendly. Most alternative menstrual products last much longer than a few hours, some even last your entire menstruating life! Using these products also reduces waste from packaging and keeps hundreds if not thousands of disposable products from washing up onto beaches. Many women also feel that these products work better for their bodies. Most tampons (except for non-bleached or organic tampons) contain dioxin. Dioxin is a toxin that is the result of bleaching tampons. Bleaching tampons does not make them sterile or better for your body, it simply makes the tampons appear cleaner because they are white. Many tampons also include synthetic fibers, such as rayon, that can make small cuts in the tissue lining the vagina. These cuts provide a place for bacteria and infection to grow (like TSS). For more information on Alternative Menstural Prodcuts and the dangers of tampons check out [www.spotsite.org] or [www.ourbodiesourselves.org]
