The Gender and Women's Studies (GWST) department allows students to study a broad array of topics related to gender, including women, men, gays and lesbians, and feminism. The department is interdisciplinary, requiring two courses outside the department for the GWST major.

Miriam Timmer once suggested renaming the department Feminism and Gender Studies, so that it could be abbreviated as FAGS.
