The purpose of this page is to achieve consensus on various housekeeping and administrative issues that arise as we continue to develop and grow The Wiki Fire.

Spam[edit]

The spam problem is worsening, and I for one am getting tired of rolling this stuff back three or four times a day. As the site becomes more popular, this is only going to get worse. So what can we do to solve this? I think that maybe we should explore going to a registered-user-only policy. I don't think it would put legitimate users out too much to have to register and sign in (seriously, it's not hard and we're not restrictive), and it would prevent most (if sadly not all) of the current spam issues. I'm beginning to agree with you. The problem is that I think we get the amount of edits that we do because people who it is fast and painless and they don't have to sign in or get an e-mail response or whatever. But, alas, this spam sucks balls. I'll scour the internet to see if there are other ways of handling the problem (though I doubt there is). In the meantime, let's get more thoughts on this. Please comment. Tfooq 18:30, 9 November 2007 (CST)

SpamBlacklist[edit]

I installed an extension called SpamBlacklist that Wikimedia maintains. The extension should block all edits that contain a url that is listed in their ever-changing blacklist. The idea is that if an edit contains one of these links, an error message will pop up and the spam bots will not be able to make their edits. Let's see if this works. It seems promising. Well, I was going to hold my tongue so that I wouldn't ginx it (and maybe I still will), but I think the spam blacklist worked like a freaking charm. That's amazing. Why didn't I do that sooner? ... haha Tfooq 17:05, 12 November 2007 (CST)
