Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He was also the Republican candidate for the Illinois Sentate Seat in 1858. He ran against Stephen Douglas. They debated all over the state, making their fifth stop in Galesburg. These were the first political debates ever. Lincoln won the debate at Knox, but got crushed in the election.
