The Knox Jazz Ensemble, or Big Band, is one of Knox College's major attractions, having performed in numerous locales, including irregular tours overseas in Spain. The band, currently directed by Nikki Whittaker, consists of the best jazz musicians in the college and hosts the annual Rootabaga Jazz Festival. The best members of this band play at Jazz Night (every Thursday night) at McGillacuddy's on Cherry Street. A member of the jazz band, guitarist Corey Heppner, has also competed in an online professional music contest.
As of the 2006-2007 year, the band has traveled to festivals and concerts at Millikin University in Decatur and Elmhurst College in Chicago-land, and has performed at Rootabaga Jazz Festival
