Ryohei Matsuda
Ryohei Matsuda, often called "Matsuda sensei" by students, is a charismatic and entertaining professor and head of the Japanese language department. Sometimes he encourages people to call him "Mat" when they have difficulty pronouncing his name. He is noted for using a variety of props during lectures, including a plastic banana, children's phone, and Sailor Moon toys. Aside from teaching classes listed on the official course schedule, Professor Matsuda is extremely active in helping students with their independent studies. He is also the faculty adviser for Japanese Club and Korean Club, and co-founded Japan Term with other professors in 2006.
In 2003, Professor Matsuda acquired a delightful dog named Genki. He also cooks food like curry rice for his students from time to time. His awareness of Japanese pop culture (including music, anime, and movies) allows him to connect better with many of his students.
Matsuda Sensei will retire in 2022.
