Periodically, crazy fires like this happen in Galesburg. In 2004 (I think), the guy who runs the dump out back of the Ramada Inn set fire to some discarded fridges, so as not to have to pay to have them cleanly disposed of. The ensuing fire resulted in a huge wall of acrid, foul smelling, poisonous orange smoke covering half of downtown Galesburg. It took hours to put out by the fire department. This was supposedly the fourth time the dump owner had done this, as paying the fine for burning trash was a lot lower than paying for clean disposal of the fridges.
