The midwest, as its name would suggest, is located in the middle of the United States. Formally defined by the Census Bureau, the midwest consists of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Census definition aside, a certain amount of confusion exists as to the midwest's boundaries. People often think that Missouri is part of the South due to the presence of slavery and its involvement with the Confederacy during the Civil War. This confusion also sometimes causes people to think that Kansas is part of the South. This is just crazy talk.
