Jazz House (left) and Steak House (right) on Flunk Day 2004. Campus Safety was surprisingly cool with the Slip 'n Slide.

Formerly a theme house, the Jazz House is a permanent house (akin to ABLE or the International House) for students involved with jazz on campus and their groupies. It is located at 260 West Tompkins Street, between Exec and the Steak House. During Rootabaga jazz festival guest artists sometimes stay in the house.

History

The Jazz House was founded in the mid-90's and was made a permanent house in the 2004-2005 school year. It houses nine students, ideally members of the Knox Jazz Ensemble or jazz combos; however, in recent years a lack of interest has placed several non-musicians into the house. The basement used to flood like a bitch, and probably still does. The best seat in the house is the roof over the back porch.

Parties

Jazz House parties are most commonly noted for loud, percussion heavy, experimental music performed by members of the Knox Jazz Ensemble and other campus bands. Jazz House parties are very loud. Wear ear plugs and expect a noise violation to shut down the fun just as you're getting into the scene. If you don't like warm, sweaty, drunk bodies slamming up against one another, do not go to the Jazz House. This is a mild form of moshing. Very few parties were held in the 2007-2008 school year because the residents generally showed a distaste for hosting live music and live crowds in their home. Hopefully the residents in the 2009-2009 school year will help jazz house redeem its former reputation as a great spot to watch a show and dance wildly.

Music

Contrary to what one might expect, fairly little jazz has been played in recent years in the Jazz House. The house has however hosted a variety of musical acts in years past, including various projects of James Wetzel and Eric Ratzel, Nightlife, Wolf Blitzer, and The Days as well as less structured performances by Jazz House residents and others. Sadly, relatively little live music was present during the 2007-2008 year. However, many of the 2008-2009 residents have expressed interest in reviving Jazz House's tradition of live music. Sources predict that both Knox and off-campus bands may perform. In addition, the 2008-2009 residents may make some sweet-ass music themselves as well. Time will tell!
