The Asian Studies Program is an interdisciplinary academic program offered at Knox. It offers two minors, in addition to other coursework.

Asian Studies[edit]

As of Spring 2007, there is no major or minor offered in Asian Studies, although they are in development. The program currently is based primarily on the Chinese and Japanese language programs, the first of which is newly created and the latter of which was transferred from the Modern Languages and Literatures Department. However, the Chinese and Japanese language faculty still are nominal members of that department.

The program offers two minors in Japanese.

Japanese (minor)[edit]

Courses Required for the Japanese minor[2][edit]

5 credits:

  • All of the following:
    • JAPN 201 (Intermediate Japanese I)
    • JAPN 202 (Intermediate Japanese II)
    • JAPN 210 (Conversation and Composition in Japanese)
  • Two of the following:

Japanese Studies (minor)[edit]

This minor allows for intermediate study in Japanese Studies.

Courses Required for the Japanese Studies minor[3][edit]

5 credits:

  • All of the following:
    • JAPN 201 (Intermediate Japanese I)
    • JAPN 202 (Intermediate Japanese II)
    • JAPN 210 (Conversation and Composition in Japanese)
  • Two of the following, at least one of which must be at the 300-level:
    • JAPN 220 (Japanese Popular Culture)
    • JAPN 330 (Comparative and International Education: Japan, China, Korea, India and the United States)
    • HIST 242 (Modern Japan)
    • HIST 340 (Culture and Diplomacy in Modern East Asia)

Chinese[edit]

The program offers coursework in Chinese, with as yet no major or minor. The only courses offered are in elementary Chinese (CHIN 101, CHIN 102, CHIN 103)
